One of the key challenges when building a new hospital is to make it flexible. From inception to completion, a hospital needs to accommodate the latest medical technology and prepare for new medical standards that could emerge over the next 10 years.
This approach is encapsulated in the New Karolinska Solna (NKS) hospital project in Sweden. Designed and managed by White Arkitekter, Scandinavia’s biggest architecture firm, the brief was to create a hospital that not only accommodated the very latest standards in radiology and operations, but also put patients first, and nurtured an ongoing collaboration between healthcare and medical research. We spoke with Jörgen Pell, an engineer at White Arkitekter about the project.
